The Monolith

Have you seen the late Stanley Kubricks's masterpiece film, '2001: A Space Odyssey'? If not, you should immediately set aside two hours and twenty one minutes of your time to view it. If you have seen the film and don't quite "get it" here are a couple of links to two possible interpretations of Kubrick's and co-screenwriter Arthur C. Clarke's esoteric message.

Root canals -- Part 1

Just got back home from the dentist's office. I had the pleasure of undergoing 2 root canals in one sitting. This was my first experience with the procedure. I had heard many painful stories from people that had been through the it, so I wasn't exactly thrilled to have it performed on me -- twice!

I sat reclined in the chair patiently waiting for the horrendous pain described by others to overcome me, but it was in fact pretty painless. The good dentist numbed my gums frequently for my comfort. There was only one instance where I was surprised by the sudden burst of pain, and nearly came out of the chair.

Now I have to wait for the second part of the procedure, having my teeth molded for crowns. Since my new insurance has a waiting period(one year!) before covering any "major" dental work I have to save some money(second job?) to cover the cost of the crowns. Which happen to be an extremely affordable price of $812(!) per crown. I need two of them.

A little history on my teeth:

When I was around six years old, I had to have my two front teeth extracted because they were abscessed. The dentist responsible for that did not put in inserts to insure my secondary teeth their rightful place. Because of that I was blessed with buck teeth.

I should have had braces long ago, but I tried to save my parents some money and didn't want to go through the whole braces thing. But in retrospect I was a fool because now I have many issues with my teeth that are going to cost A LOT more to correct.

The local anesthetic is beginning to wear off now and I need to go get some ibuprofen.

"What the heck do you eat?"

theWife’s co-workers are always asking about her husbands vegan eating habits, so I thought I would start sharing some meals that I enjoy with the fine folks on Internet.

I few days ago I prepared a very tasty salad for dinner. Since I have a difficult time choosing what ingredients to add to a salad I normally throw-in everything at my disposal.

Ingredients:
-Spring mix of leafy greens
-Chopped red peppers
-Chopped yellow peppers
-Sliced mushrooms
-Chopped red onion
-Sliced tomatoes
-Pumpkin seeds
-Sunflower seeds
-Sliced almonds
-Dried cranberries
-Bee pollen

Fifth Columnists

Please take a moment from your busy day to read this.

About 13 years ago, I worked at a restaurant bussing tables. One day as I was clearing a table I found a pamphlet left by the customer. The pamphlet was a warning to people concerning the planned New World Order and the detention centers that would be used to house American citizens who rejected it. It was a very interesting read for a teenage boy living in a small town. A few people who I had shared the ideas suggested in the pamphlet with could not believe what I was saying. Replying with things like, "They can't do that in the United States," "Why would our government want to do that for?," or "Our constitution would allow for something like the NWO to happen."

Well, it looks like that pamphlet found years ago was indeed a bona fide warning.

"Hello IT. Have you tried turning it off and on again?"

I just finished watching all six episodes of "The IT Crowd." The IT Crowd is a hilarious new comedy series on BBC Channel 4 (UK). It's produced by the same person who produced "The Office," and written by a writer for "Father Ted." Both of which I would highly recommend to anyone with a sense of humor. I caught myself laughing out loud many times through-out each episode despite the often dreaded use a laugh track.

I couldn't wait until the planned DVD release date of October (WTF!) to watch it, so I summoned the episodes via P2P client.

Kaboom!? versus "The Big Red Pillow"

Well folks, here is the latest installment of the "Kaboom!? versus ______" series. In this episode Kaboom!? carries out a well-planned blitzkrieg on an unassuming red pillow.

Enjoy!

The juice is loose

I'm currently enjoying a some fresh juice. The recipe rocking my taste buds is as follows:

1 - Mango
2 - Kiwi
1 - Carrot

I've used an orange instead of the mango and it tastes just as good. Mangos are going for $2 a piece in my neighborhood, which is a bit too expensive for me. Plus, using an orange seems to decrease the time of preparation. Peeling a mango and removing the big nasty seed is a pain in the pooper for me.

The Tasks of Mourning

Today (March 6) would have been my mom's 51st birthday. Up until now I really haven't expressed my thoughts on the passing of my mother to anyone other than my wife. I usually keep my emotions hidden, sometimes even from myself. As another step towards closure I am writing this blog entry.

My mom died of a heart attack during the evening of September 26th, 2001. She was at my grandma's house playing cards along with her co-worker, Liz. According to my dad, she was complaining of some heartburn and asked my dad to go buy some Rolaids to alleviate the pain. Rolaids was a staple of my moms diet for as long as I can remember. My Dad also told me (which was pretty vague) that she collapsed onto the floor. Paramedics came to the house and tried to restore life signs and transported her to the local hospital. They were unsuccessful and she was pronounced dead.

I had just moved to Chicago a few weeks prior to her dying. I received a phone call from my aunt. I thought it was strange that she was calling me and she sounded really upset. She told me that my mom had suffered a heart attack. I asked her were she was, thinking she was okay. Expecting her reply to be at the hospital, she told me that mom was at Powers & Priebe, a funeral home in my hometown. I screamed, went into shock and gave my wife the phone to see if what I was told was really true. It was. I dropped to my knees in the dining room. My roommates asked what was wrong. I had to utter a phrase that I was not prepared to speak this early in my life: "My mom is dead."

My wife and I were supposed to go back to my hometown the weekend before and visit my family, but decided to wait. As you can probably imagine, not going that weekend made me very regretful for a long time afterwards.

My mom was always there for me and that was a very comfortable feeling to have growing up. Having that feeling taken from me left a hole too big to fill for the longest time. Mom had a great sense of humor and a sincere laugh. She was a genuine person who was protective of her family and friends. She would rather suffer the burden herself instead of someone else.

My father and mother had a very difficult relationship. As far back as my memory goes they were never really happy to be together. But my mom stuck it out for as long as she could for her kids. She most likely would have ended the marriage years ago if it were not for me begging her to stay with my father. At that time I was terrified of the changes that divorce usually brings with it. Mom finally had had her fill of my dad and asked him leave the house for a period of time. My father ended up moving in with his parents.

A little over a year later while still living with his parents, my dad's mother died. Sadly, my grandmother's death was the beginning of a new life for my mom and dad's relationship. They had fallen in love again. I was stunned by their newfound love for each other and so happy they were back together. A few months later, she died.

I took my mothers death personally for a long time. I witnessed my great grandma's last breath, my grandma's death, watched as my grandpa lay dead on the kitchen floor with the last half of his dinner patiently waiting to be eaten, but I was unable to be with my mom during her last minutes. To make things worse I was 3 fucking hours away from her. I shook my clenched fists at the heavens and cursed all of the gods. How could such a thing happen at such an exultant period of her life, and mine as well? I had just moved and thought I was about to initiate the beginning of the rest of my life. The initiation began, but not according to the terms I had expected. Even though I would love her to be alive still and be able to give her the title of "grandma," I have accepted her passing with a smile.

I can hear her laughing at me now while writing this.

Happy Birthday Mom, I still miss you!

Note: I took this picture of her while she was at work. I think this is was one of the last picures taken of her. See the broach she is wearing? It has the birth stones for my brother, my wife, and myself on it. She wore this everyday. She is wearing it right now.

Fuck you, gravity!

Holy smokes, kids. This looks like something to keep an eye on.

From IndiaDaily.com:"Dighi in Pune, the city of the brightest Indian defense research scientists and engineers is full of whispers these days. According to some sources in Pune the scientists are tight lipped and say they cannot speak till 2012. What is going to happen in 2012? No one knows but they keep saying before any question is asked - "I know nothing!" If you carefully keep your ears on these whispers you will realize India has tested something no one wants to talk about, It is a break through in conventional Physics and traditional mechanical and aeronautical engineering." Read the full article here.

Strangely, the possible anti-gravity device diagram used in the article looks to me like a combination of two inventions developed by Nikola Tesla. Plus, I find it a bit odd (synchronistic?) that the scientists working on the project cannot speak of this research until the year 2012.

Pune, India is also the home of Osho's(formerly known as Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh) International Meditation Resort.

Food for thought... and much, much more

Ever wondered where food comes from? How it's produced, or processed? How industrial/commercial farming is destroying agriculture and pushing out the independent family farmers of the United States? What are the effects of GMO (genetically modified organism) or genetically engineered foods (GE)? Me neither. Well, until about a year ago.

I was completely ignorant on the subject of food. All I knew was that if I did not eat food I would eventually die. That's about it. My three food groups were meat, cheese and bread. I avoided vegetables and fruits most of the time. If I did eat any vegetables or fruit, it was processed in some way (canned, covered in preservatives and additives). I rarely, and I do mean rarely, ate fresh produce. When I went to restaurants I always ordered my food without anything other than meat, cheese or bread. I still remember the dumbfounded looks I would get at Subway when I would order a 12 inch turkey and bacon (extra bacon) sub with cheese. When the worker would ask if I would like anything else, I would decline. I thought their looks were strange, even laughable, but now I understand.

Over the last year my diet (I am NOT speaking of diet fads or trends; i.e., Atkins, South Beach) has changed and I have become more informed on the subject of nutrition. Due to these changes my eating habits have changed dramatically. I went from eating fast food nearly every meal, to grabbing a healthy meal once or twice a week from a vegetarian/vegan friendly restaurant or café. At this point I do not eat any animal flesh, or consume any diary. Food (energy) in my opinion appears to be more than just a quick fix for those pesky hunger pains. I'll go into more detail about this in the future.

Anyway... Here are a few links to some videos and mp3's on the subject of food:

Kaboom!? versus Chucky, Series 1

Here is the first episode of the "Dr. Kaboom!? versus _______" series. In this episode, Dr. Kaboom!? battles the infamous Chucky doll. When we first got Kaboom!?, he would NOT go near Chucky and would go ape shit crazy when I would just barely move Chucky.

Last week, Dr. Kaboom!? took it upon himself to attack Chucky without being provoked. Dr. Kaboom!? was tired of being afraid, he was setting himself free from Chucky's domination. I was very proud, and nearly pissed myself watching the epic encounter.

Sold!

I've recently purchased this new place and am starting to unpack and unload from the old house. Bear with me as I direct the clumsy movers around all the furniture and try to find just the right place for all my baggage.

For now, enjoy a few posts from my previous quarters. I'll be back to posting regularly just as soon as the realtor drops off the keys.
